1. The Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls onthe 15th of the eighth month of our Chinese lunar calendar. As oneof the traditional Chinese festivals, it has been enjoying great popularity inour country. Usually, no matter how far away or how busy we are, we will try toreturn home for the celebration. The moon that night looks the brightest in thewhole lunar month. What we love most is the time we enjoy the full moontogether. With the beautiful moon up in the sky, we sit together and eat mooncakes and fruit, sharing our stories. In addition to these traditionalactivities, we have a wider range of choices such as travelling and visitingour relatives or friends.

2.

Deareditor,

Now, more and more students aregetting fond of western fast food, and thus they take in too much sugar andfat. I don’t think it good for their health.

There are all kinds of foods in theworld. Which one is healthier, the Chinese food or the western fast food?Different people have different choices.

In my opinion, the Chinese food ishealthier. Firstly, the Chinese food contains a lot of fruit and greenvegetables. It is rich in fiber and low in sugar and fat. Secondly, the Chinesefood is very delicious and has many dishes. It is nice to taste. I think it isthe healthiest in the world. So many Chinese people can keep fit and have whiteteeth.

3.

In my opinion, money plays a veryimportant part in our daily life. However, even though we can’t live withoutmoney, it isn’t everything. I think the most important thing about money is howwe spend it and what we do with it.

If I had one million dollars, Iwould start many schools for children in poor areas, because they are badly inneed of good education. I was totally shocked when I saw it in TV that so manychildren in                        China             are too poor to go to school. Also, I would give away some money to those inneed, because it’s better to give than to receive.

The reason why I would do thesethings is that money itself can’t bring us happiness. Only by helping otherscan we gain a real sense of happiness and pleasure.

4.

Recently, students in our classhave had a discussion on whether space is worth exploring.

30% of us think space explorationis not worthwhile. They think space is too far away from us and our daily life. And the money spent on space exploration can be used to solve the earth’sproblems such as starvation and pollution.

On the other hand, 70% think spaceis worthy of exploration because we have benefited a lot from it, such as usingsatellites for communication and weather forecast. What’s more, with furtherspace research, we may solve the population problem by moving to other planetsone day. Also, space research will enable us to find new sources to deal withthe problem of energy shortages on the earth.

5.

DearDavid,

How are you doing these days? Thankyou for your help and kindness while we were traveling in                        Singapore             . Itwas very kind of you to treat us to good meals and show us around.                        Singapore             isreally a very good place to visit and I like it very much. We were greatlyimpressed by its beautiful scenery and delicious food. I had a great time thereand learned a lot about                        Singapore             .I found                    Singapore         is verydifferent from                        Beijing             in climate and culture, etc. And I would like to invite you to visit                    Beijing         ; I’ll show you around the places of interest, suchas the Great Wall and the                        Palace                            Museum             .

Looking forward to your earlyreply.

Best wishes,

Yours,

Li Hua

6.

DearEditor,

I’m writing to tell you about asurvey carried out in our school about whether we are willing to have a youngersibling in our families.

According to the survey, 78% of thestudents would love to have a brother or sister with whom they can play. Therefore, they will no longer feel lonely. In addition, they will learn toshare with others. However, 17% of them are not in favor of it. In their view, they may worry that they aren’t they only of the family any longer. What’sworse, having a sibling will surely increase the burden of the family. Lastly, only 5% of the students think it makes no difference to them whether they willhave a younger sibling or not.

As far as I’m concerned, havingsiblings does have many advantages. So I’m eager to have a younger sibling.

Yours,

Li Hua

7.

DearSir,

My name is Li Hua. I am writing toshow my concern about the effects of modern media on us students.

Nowadays, iPads are very popular inour school. Many students hold the view that possessing an iPad is a fashion. There is no doubt that with it we can listen to music, download learningmaterials, and so on. In other words, it’s helpful to our studies, especiallyour English learning.

However, each coin has two sides. Some students bring their iPads to the classroom and listen to music, whichruins our learning atmosphere. What’s worse, some even waste their precioustime playing games.

In my opinion, school is a placewhere we should focus our attention on lessons, so iPads should be banned inclassroom. I hope you will take my suggestions into consideration.

I am looking forward to your earlyreply.

Yours,

Li Hua

ThursdayMay 1, 2014

This afternoon an American highschool delegation, consisting of 10 students and 5 teachers came to visit ourschool. Our headmaster showed them around some parts of the school.

Fortunately, our class was chosento have an informal discussion with the visitors. Everyone at present wasactive to introduce themselves one by one. Our monitor, Zhang Hua, made a briefintroduction of the Chinese traditional festivals. Soon after that Tom, anAmerican student, who was a great fan of Yao Ming and Jeremy Shu-How Lin, saidsomething about NBA and some other hobbies. Then we talked about some othertopics that we were concerned with.

Almost an hour had passed before werealized it. It’s really amazing to talk with the American teachers andstudents in English, Which helps us a lot with our English.

9.

Nowadays, a lot of schools keeptheir students in school all day long. Students have different opinions aboutit. Some of the students think they enjoy less freedom and have little chanceto get in touch with society. They are not able to fully develop theirinterests and hobbies. Therefore, they have lost interest in their studies.

Some others think school is thebest place to get knowledge so they should put their heart into their lessons. Some students lack the ability to control themselves. Once out of school, theymay lose control of themselves and do something that will influence/affecttheir studies.

Personally, I think it necessary tokeep students at school. But at the same time schools should organize variousactivities so that students can enjoy their school life.

10.

DearZhang Hua,

I’m sorry to hear that you didn’tdo well in your last exam. You are not the only one who seems to try his bestbut end up with a failure in exams. Quite a number of students feel the sameway as you and they tend to lose their confidence and don’t want to study hardany longer. I’m sure you know that it’s unwise to do so because you might beleft far behind.

I was once in the same situation asyours. Failure is the mother of success. In face of failure, what we need to dois to calm down and reflect our learning methods and make some possible changesor to ask the teachers for advice. Anyway,                        Rome             is not built on a day. Only by stickingto studying persistently can we make progress step by step till success. Itruly hope I can be of some help to you.

Yours,

Li Ming
